reblogging again about Big Eden made me think about some of the native american/canadian queer cinema (Indigiqueer Cinema) I've enjoyed.

Found a handy dandy Letterboxd List called Queer Native Pride and Beyond that has a whole bunch of movies I haven't seen yet, and below some of the ones I've gotten to experience (three out of four are linked):

Big Eden: a story about a gay man who returns home, because his grandfather gets sick. A sweet, beautiful man (played by Eric Schweig) starts to secretly make him food to help out. it's an amazing slice-of-life/subtly utopian bit of film-making, in that nobody in the town is homophobic, but being gay/shame is still a big part of the exploration within it.

Wildhood: a movie I got to watch at a film festival (always good to go to your local queer film festivals, many surprises to be had) and it blew me away. a roadtrip movie about two brothers who escape their abusive father to reconnect with the elder's mother and Mi'kmaq heritage. letting go of the instilled shame of being indigenous goes hand in hand with letting go of the instilled shame of being queer

Fancy Dance: this movie isn't about being queer, it's about the ongoing murder of indigenous woman and girls, and it's also a beautiful road trip film between an aunt and her niece, the former of whom is sure her sister is dead but unwilling to face it and to destroy her niece's innocence. Lily Gladstone plays the lead, who's also a lesbian, which is just a choice that works really well for the movie even if it's not the focal point (available on Apple+ TV and however you access movies, but would recommend throwing this one some views if you have access to official streaming)

Honey Moccasin: a 1998 movie i watched at another film festival (this time online), it's anarchic, it's a comedy, it's a thriller, it's got musical beats, it weaves in the intricacies of exploring Native identity and Queer identity, it's a surreal story about a few things, one of which include focus on a "closeted drag queen." it's a movie that beats against conventional film-making to create something not beholden to tropes and clichés forced upon narratives about being Native

Me, watching some YJS fans justify what Shauna did to Mari by using clips of Mari and Jackie giggling in s1 (normal teenage girl things), or Mari speaking the truth and trying to take Jackie's jacket (even though it was the middle of winter and the group were already sharing clothes), with said fans saying that they've would've done worse to Mari in response, acting like that makes them any better:

I saw someone say something about how the writers intend to bring everyone back for season two, but then, if they get more seasons, start to be more realistic about losing characters at different levels of training, which freaks me out specifically because of Samira. After season two, assuming the same time jump, she'll be done with her residency...like, yeah, she's amazing and should go do a cool fellowship, or get a new job somewhere far away from where she was trained and get that clean slate somewhere even compliments aren't grounded in the premise of her being too slow, but I don't want to lose her so fast. You can't send away the narrative heir to your main character!

i see most bylers want the boys to get to the chase at like the first half of the season but am i the only one that would be absolutely fine with byler confessing and kissing at the last like forty minutes of the show... i don't care about seeing their actual established relationship, i like the build up... the tension... the "oh my god we are childhood best friends and we're in the apocalypse and you might die and we all might die and you're gay and in love with me and we might be gay and in love and we're like 16 and its fucking 1987 in midwest america" that's more than enough for me. it's not about the destination its the journey etc etc. you can leave all the rest up to the imagination and fanfic or to some post-canon novel.

You are denying the existence of romance in wbk by saying" there's over 160 chapters and there's no set up" where's the same energy for Sakura's backstory?? There's over 160 chapters and there's no mc backstory!

Alright, I know you’ve been going around to everyone using the main tag and venting your frustrations, so I’m gonna be civil and kind to you ok?

Sakuras backstory HAS been setup, just not in a way that divulges a ton of details. We know that his parents aren’t in the picture (wether they’re dead or abandoned him), we know that he’s been treated with scorn and distrust from everyone (from kids running at the sight of his hair to an adult accusing him of stealing his wallet and threatening to call the cops), we know that he had to learn to fight to defend himself, we know that he hasn’t had anyone to rely on to the point that his friends coming to check on him while he’s sick is SHOCKING to him. If you’ve watched the anime the opening scene establishes that he was passed around from place to place (possibly between relatives) and that his caretakers also viewed him with scorn and disgust.

The main thing is that Sakura doesn’t WANT to talk about his past. (he basically said so himself when everything was happening with Anzai, “everyone has a thing or two they don’t wanna talk about”) The main connecting thread through all of the backstories in the series so far is that the character in question is changing/has changed enough that they can reflect on their past through new eyes. Sakura is nowhere near ready for that, he’s only just gotten to the point that he can call his friends Friends, and he still can’t accept that their praise and love is unconditional. To give his backstory now, when he’s not ready to face it, would feel rushed and unearned. Sakuras full backstory likely won’t come till near the end of the series, once he’s gone through major changes and can finally face his past through new eyes and accept that he does deserve love and good things. This isn’t because the author doesn’t care, but because this is what they think is best for the character. Obviously you’re free to disagree and not like this writing choice, but this is how I see it and why I think it works writing wise.

in general i find it kinda annoying when people claim to like a show but dont care about anyone but their one (1) singular fave character and whenever they aren't the focus of an episode or don't have an appearance they act like that makes it fundamentally bad or flawed somehow. i dont really have a "favorite" character for almost any show but i just don't understand not caring about any of the other characters even a little bit?? like just the one guy??? it feels like such a self-centered worldview which whatever that's your right but it has to be such a miserable way to live tbh

i have a lot of thoughts about orym's character arc, seemingly resolved as it is, but most of them are really just my disappointment that the process felt so thoroughly disconnected from anyone in bh, except a little bit dorian at the very end. especially given that grief and self-sacrifice bordering on passive suicidal ideation are major parts of like. the majority of their characters.

I understand why Towa and Aoba get lots of fan content together, and I can get behind that, but really the sets we need are Towa+Akira and Aoba+Konoe. Pairs that have enough in common they would get along a little too well

listening to Operation Mincemeat and I'm not one to dreamcast typically but I do think Daniel Radcliffe could be an excellent Charles if they ever felt the need to stunt cast or made a movie (which I don't necessarily think a movie version would work without quite a bit of reworking / if they filmed it I'd rather a pro shot and with a pro shot I'd want the original cast / creators)

the way the ericson group were at the outbreak just a bunch of troubled kids who made various mistakes or committed crimes and were judged by a system that punished and abandoned them instead of giving them the support and love they needed, are then nearly a decade later put into a situation where now they must judge a troubled child for the mistakes and crimes hes committed against them. and 5 to 3 vote them out 😭
